It’s important to build teams that include people who bring different perspectives to the table. All-Star Dreamer Daymond John reminds us that we should look for team members with different skill sets. He says, “When we get into businesses, we’re experts at one or two things. If you think you can be an expert at warehousing, an expert manufacturer, an expert distributor, an expert advertiser, and an expert designer, you’re wrong. You have to surround yourself with people and assets that can deploy these things. You can’t do it alone, so be careful to build the best team you can.”

Jennifer Fleiss also understands the importance of complementary relationships. In her Rent the Runway cofounder, she’s found an excellent counterpart to create balance at the company’s executive level. “My cofounder is very much a big, strategic thinker,” she says. “She’s a great salesperson who can rally teams around those ideas, and I’m the doer. I’m, ‘How do we get from point A to point B?’ If you have a partner, you need to look at your backgrounds and see if you have complementary skill sets. You need to make sure your personalities fit and work together.”
